Chapter 33
EPHEMERALIZATION
The very character of simple arithmetic of mathematics indicates that all progressions are from material to abstract, by which we mean intangibility, non-sensoriality, EPHEMERALIZATION.
Starting with 1, man developed first 2, then 3, then 4, et cetera, all parts of 1. This division of 1 evolves a progression of a particle diminution which, although it may never become 0, as particles, is none the less toward o.
The progression in the art of measuring has been pointed out as evolving from the physical foot rule to radio cross beams, the latter being far more able, as an instrument of abstract measure, than the earlier developed surveyor’s unit of measure. There is, in reality, a distinct difference between the two in that the surveyor’s operation involves sensoriality throughout its dimensions, whereas the radio cross-bearing measurement implies an operation of measuring in a non-sensorial band or octave.
Up to the time of the World War major industry worked practically only in four sensorial or material bands, and man is still sensorially aware only in four. Industrial research is now working in 70 bands of energy radiation, that is, on a 17 to 1 basis of industrial guidance in bands that can be contacted only through mental activity vs. sensorial experience. This is proof-positive of a mind-over-matter dominance and frees mind-over-matter dominance from a purely ‘‘mystical’’ or ‘‘literary’’ connotation into a bread-and-butter economic significance.
At either end of the radio process of measure there is a mathematical STEP DOWN or STEP UP, INTO or OUT OF the non-sensorial band, FROM or TO the sensorial band of awareness. These steps up and steps down have become possible through the scientific pursuit of a purely mathematical path which, SPECULATION indicated, MIGHT provide a non-sensorial path. When explored this path proved the reliability of mathematical speculation, and its translatable truth in reality, a non-compromisable reality far more actual than subject-to-illusion, direct sensorial means.
Radio measurement is teleologic measurement, for sensorial ends are jointed by an abstract means 1X1. The TEL in teleology is the TEL of in-TEL-ligent, TEL-epathy, American TEL. & TEL., TELevision and TEL-escope, or ‘‘TELL what you saw, or ‘‘It TELLS’’ (i.e., it COUNTS, it mathematically rationalizes to advantage, a TELLER, an interpolator and COUNTER-OUTER of abstractly accounted credit-in figures on the books into units of sensorial specie. (Something to show for speculation.)
A measuring method more abstract than the radio crossbearing measurement, the surveyor’s visual line measuring, or the humptydumpty foot rule measure, is unquestionably the astronomer’s measurement of distances to heavenly bodies, through far-pentration to non-sensorial octaves by means of mathematics, currently running into measurements as great, to date, as 2,700 billion billion miles (a mere fraction of the measurements of tomorrow).
This is as true of the microcosm as of the macrocosm. In the microcosm weights and measurements must be made in minute fractions beyond the current sensorial (5000 diameter) amplification of the most able microscope. Purely mathematical and abstract calculations beyond the sensorial in the microcosm are carried out in terms of atomic weights and electrical characteristics of the elements. There is also a time rate universe which we might call the chronocosm in which abstract calculations must lead us when venturing beyond the sensorially apprehended fastest and slowest. Old religion’s ‘‘the quick and the dead’’ quite reasonably assigns to the dead all sensorially measurable speed.
As one of the most thrilling examples of such calculation and its prognosticating ability, one may cite Dmitri Mendelejeff’s demonstration (1868-1870) in this abstract field of measurement in the microcosm. At the time of Mendelejeff’s entry into the electro-chemical world basic chemical elements were known empirically to exist. Certain of the mathematics of the empirically known elements’ electrical, weight, and activity properties had been determined. Mendelejeff ramified a complete mathematically inferential universe based on the detected properties of the 71 elements that had been discovered, and ascertained mathematically that there would be discovered 21 additional elements in the universe the characteristics of which would be not single but multiple, and would thus provide a certainty of identity by ‘‘cross fix.’’ He described accurately the multifold atomic characteristics of the as yet undiscovered elements and stated that their existence was necessary to ‘‘satisfaction’’ of mathematical periodic-progression and a mathematically ramified and balanced cosmic symphony. Bach’s point-counterpoint mathematical ramification of music is the harmoniously sensorial counterpart of Mendelejeff’s abstract exploration; interestingly the octave period is common to both.
Mendelejeff prognosticated a total of 92 elements and a mysterious 93rd to cover the infinite factor of error—the ‘‘random element.’’ Mendelejeff prepared a chart which he called the ‘‘periodic chart of the atoms.’’ It was somewhat similar in appearance to our every day of the month calendar, that is, with numbers in rows and with columns 1 to 93. The columns and lengths of line were, however, unequal in numbers of squares. The further to the left and the higher on the chart, the more ‘‘active’’ the element. Mendelejeff inserted all the mathematical descriptions of the undiscovered elements. One by one over a period of 70 years science has discovered them and has found them to have precisely each and every characteristic prognosticated by Mendelejeff. He did not include their electrical properties of electron and proton and neutron arrangement for the latter was not as yet discovered. Their subsequent discovery and effect of changes upon his chart were substantially slight.
A popular understanding of this truly miraculous penetration by Mendelejeff from the sensorial into the abstract and return should certify industry’s unfaltering and ceaseless subscription to its research departments’ activities whose current establishments (approximately 5000 in the U. S. alone) are constantly threatened with extinction through impulses of false ‘‘practical’’ economy. (Incidentally Fincap might be cautioned against the undue discount of the Russian mind.)
Another thrilling EPHEMERALIZATION has been the development of the treatment of syphilis. From complete failure, syphilis therapy has progressed through meager but scientifically promising stages of complicated malarial infection compounded with 606 (neosalvarsan) to approximately certain success in simple electrical energy control, ‘‘sandwiching’’ 606, a chemical energy constituent, with electrically induced special temperature, all emulating mathematically the essence of circuitous and dangerous empirical trail blazing. The dramatic lifelong tenuous and ultimately successful pursuit of this ‘‘miracle’’ by Wagner-Juareg is inspirational. The ephemeralization in this case was neither of space nor weight but thermal, i.e., a TIME-ENERGY progression of the ‘‘chronergeticosm.’’
It is of more than casual interest to note that every one of the ephemeralization trends, whether in measuring or medicine, eventually hits the electrical stage wherein Einstein’s formula, with ‘‘E’’ for energy, which can stand also for electricity, becomes the most simple symbol of the unity toward which the relative progression on the other side of the equation (mass) must evolute.
A corollary to the ephemeralizing-toward-pure-energyprogression that is taking place throughout all science, and, ensuingly, throughout industry—which simply translates science into bread and butter for people—is that the more abstract the means of accomplishment the more specific the results:
Efficiency = doing more with less. EFFICIENCY EPHEMERALIZES.
