NC State School of Design
The School of Design at North Carolina State, Raleigh — a mid-century centre of American design education and one of the southern nodes through which Fuller's geometry travelled.
The school published the Student Publication of the School of Design from Vol. 1 (1951) through Vol. 25 (1977). In 1977 the Harrye Lyons Design Library compiled a 136-page cumulative author and subject index to that run, which the corpus holds in full transcription — a map of what the school thought worth publishing across a quarter century.
Henry L. Kamphoefner was Dean of the School of Design, building it into one of the most influential American design programmes of the mid-twentieth century and a hub of the modernist culture in which Fuller's geodesic and Dymaxion ideas circulated.
Role in Fuller's world
The School of Design is the academic environment, rather than a single collaboration, that carried Fuller's ideas into a generation of American designers. Its Student Publication is a primary record of how his geometry was taught, argued over, and absorbed outside his own offices.
