Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art, New York, which showed Fuller's structures as objects in an art museum rather than as engineering, and later placed his housing work in the lineage of industrial prefabrication.
MoMA exhibited Three Structures by Buckminster Fuller in the Garden of the Museum of Modern Art, New York — an installation of Fuller structures in the museum's garden, presenting them at full scale to a gallery audience.
The museum returned to Fuller in Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling, which ran 20 July – 20 October 2008 and situated his prefabricated dwelling work within the wider history of factory-made housing.
Fuller appeared in Emerging Ecologies: Architecture and the Rise of Environmentalism (17 September 2023 – 20 January 2024), the first major museum survey of architecture and the American environmental movement, in the "Enclosed Ecologies" section alongside Beverly Willis and Emilio Ambasz.
Hyundai Card First Look: R. Buckminster Fuller (2026–2027)
MoMA's most recent Fuller engagement opens November 12, 2026 and runs through Spring 2027 as part of the Hyundai Card First Look series, which spotlights recent acquisitions. The exhibition presents Inventions: Twelve Around One, a 1981 screenprint portfolio that brings together drawings from Fuller's 28 US patents with images of their realized artifacts — the air-deliverable dwelling, the prefabricated bathroom, the three-wheeled car, and the geodesic dome.
Fuller called his patents "an equally valid scientific record of my discoveries and inventions," framing them as a substitute for the academic journals he felt excluded from for lack of credentials. The portfolio distils his lifelong project of "doing more with less" — maximum function with minimum material and energy.
Organized by Evangelos Kotsioris (Director, Emilio Ambasz Institute for the Joint Study of the Built and the Natural Environment; Curator, Department of Architecture and Design), Marco Piscitelli (Curatorial Assistant, Ambasz Institute), Lydia Mullin (Manager of Collection Galleries, Curatorial Affairs), and Elizabeth Wickham (Curatorial Assistant, Department of Painting and Sculpture). The cross-departmental organization reflects the portfolio's dual status as design artifact and fine-art print. Funded by the Committee on Architecture and Design.
Role in Fuller's world
MoMA is where Fuller's structures were received as culture rather than as product. The garden installation treated a Fuller dome as something to be looked at; Home Delivery placed the Dymaxion dwelling in a historical argument about industrialised housing; Emerging Ecologies situated his work in the environmental movement; and the 2026 First Look frames Inventions: Twelve Around One as a recent acquisition worthy of dedicated gallery presentation. Together they account for much of Fuller's standing in the art-institutional record, and the Emilio Ambasz Institute's involvement places the latest show squarely in MoMA's architecture-and-design curatorial line.
